Roswell, GA, 2017

Antonio Aguilar, an 8th grade student at the school where I worked, wrote an essay in 2010 entitled “Who am I”.  I kept a copy, even taking it to Chile with me, as I knew that I was going to use it somehow.

A couple of months ago it was time.

The student finished his essay:  We come to the promising land for a better life.  It´s as if a better life will never come due to racism.  My people build the roof you are sitting under.  Who am I?  I am a Mexican American. I didn´t choose my race I just got lucky.

Mexican weaving, commercial cotton fabric, cotton fabric eco printed by Paulina Mella.  Machine Pieced, hand quilted.

This quilt is on sale at The Artisans Village Art Gallery in Eatonton, Georgia.
